The Caloric brand name will be reintroduced on kitchen appliances in late 2012 after being off the market since the 1990s.
JMM Lee Properties, LLC is the owner and licensor of the Caloric brand as part of a diverse portfolio of consumer trademarks. IMM noted that the Caloric appliance brand was known as one of the first brands to offer a complete line of matching appliances for upscale kitchens.
"Consumers remember Caloric for quality gas ranges and complete kitchen appliance sets," said Michael Lee, a managing partner at JMM Lee Properties. "They were one of the first to offer a matching bundle of custom color kitchen appliances and decor."
The new Caloric brand will offer built-in appliances, beginning with a line of stainless steel ovens and ranges, in the fall of 2012. The company plans to roll out an entire line of built-in and counter top appliances in phases over the next year.
"Before Caloric, consumers would pick and choose appliances from a variety of manufactures," said Lee. "In the 1950s and 1960s Caloric created the complete kitchen package by offering built-in ovens, dishwashers, refrigerators, vent hoods; literally everything including a matching kitchen sink."
Caloric was also one of the first companies to focus on built-in kitchen appliances, including the company's iconic gas wall ovens.
Caloric Corporation started as a stove maker in the 1940s and was acquired by Raytheon Company - owner of kitchen appliance OEM Amana and laundry appliance brand Speed Queen - in 1967. Caloric and Speed Queen operations were eventually absorbed into Amana operations in the early 1990s.
The 1990s eventually saw the phase-out of the Caloric brand name and it remained a dormant property of Amana. Amana was acquired by Goodman in 1997, then by Maytag in 2002. Maytag, along with Amana and its ownership of the Caloric brand name, were acquired by Whirlpool Corporation in 2006. Whirlpool retained ownership of the unused Caloric brand until last year.
New brand owner JMM Lee Properties also owns and licenses two other legacy appliance trademarks once owned by Amana: Modern Maid and Litton. Other trademarks owned and licensed by the company include Bendix, AirTouch, Frogskins, and Slates.
