America VS. China for Appliance Manufacturing

America VS. China for Appliance Manufacturing

We found a great article stating that it is possible that by 2015, the US will be in a strong position to bring 200 - 300 million jobs to the US by bringing appliance manufacturing back to the states.

----------------------------------------------------------

As many as 3 million jobs could be added in the United States by the end of the decade as a result of reshoring of manufacturing from China.

With U.S. competitiveness continuing to improve and costs in China rising, the United States will be in a strong position by 2015 to eventually add 2 million to 3 million jobs and an estimated $100 billion in annual output in a range of industries, according to a new report by The Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

The report - U.S. Manufacturing Nears the Tipping Point: Which Industries, Why, and How Much? - is the latest study by the group of the emerging reshoring or "insourcing" trend. The report expands upon earlier BCG research released last year on the changing economics that are starting to favor manufacturing in the U.S.

The first report, published in August, explained how 15-20% annual increases in Chinese wages and other factors were rapidly eroding China's manufacturing cost advantage over the U.S.

In October 2011, BCG's second set of findings identified seven broad industry sectors most likely to reach a "tipping point" in the next five years - the point where China's shrinking cost advantage should prompt companies to rethink where they produce goods meant for sale in North America.

The second formal report - authored by Harold L. Sirkin, Michael Zinser, Douglas Hohner, and Justin Rose - elaborates on those findings and projects how much production work is likely to shift from China to the U.S. in each of the seven tipping-point sectors - including appliances.

The combination of manufacturing work returning from China in these sectors and increased U.S. exports due to improved global competitiveness is expected to create 2 million to 3 million U.S. jobs by the end of the decade. The job gains will come directly through added factory work (600,000 to 1 million jobs) and indirectly through supporting services, such as construction, transportation, and retail.

Harold L. Sirkin, a BCG senior partner and coauthor of the report, said higher wages in China is only part of the reason that America may see a manufacturing renaissance. "The U.S. manufacturing sector has gotten a lot more competitive over the past decade. And in recent years, companies have been paying much closer attention to the total costs of delivering a product made in China compared with making it closer to the end customer."

BCG identified several large and small companies that have added or plan to add U.S. production after assessing the costs and risks. Among them: Farouk Systems Group, a Houston-based producer of professional hair care appliances and spa products. The report noted that Farouk Systems plans to move final assembly of some appliances from China and South Korea to a 1000-worker factory in Houston as a way of cutting inventory costs.

"This trend is still in the early stages," stressed Michael Zinser, a BCG partner who leads the firm's manufacturing work in the Americas. "But we expect it to accelerate as the new math of manufacturing increasingly favors the U.S. and as federal, state, and local governments provide more support for companies considering opportunities to reshore work."
Appliance Industry Factors
BCG's report noted that the U.S. still manufactures 52% of appliances sold domestically.

The report said that China supplies $6 billion in small appliances to the United States each year, as well as major appliances. U.S. imports of products in the Appliances and Electrical Equipment category (which includes lighting products) from China in 2010 were $25 billion. Total goods consumed by the United States in this category, the report said, was $134 billion.

"Conservatively, we expect that around half the appliance manufacturing returning to North America will be done in the U.S., despite Mexico's cost advantage," the BCG report stated, noting that, "Some appliance manufacturers that have moved to Mexico have complained of quality problems due to shortages of skilled workers."

In addition, incentives from federal, state, and local governments in the form of tax breaks and grants are helping to convince producers to bring manufacturing back to the U.S. or expand existing U.S. manufacturing.

Other considerations have long-favored U.S. manufacturing - faster time-to-market, better availability of skilled workers, and government incentives. The report said that, as the cost gap with China continues to shrink, these considerations will become important again and "are likely to tilt the balance in America's favor as a manufacturing location."

Bertazzoni, a family-owned producer of cooking appliances, was awarded the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show "Best of Show Award" for one of its new appliance products, the Segmented Cooktop. The award is presented to the product that exhibits the best in functionality, quality/durability, flexibility, aesthetics/style, and innovation.

The Bertazzoni Segmented Cooktop combines the power of gas, an electric griddle, and induction cooking in one cooktop platform.

The low profile design fits the standard cut-out for a 36-inch cooktop and each cooking surface is designed with three 12-inch segments per fuel type.

"When we set out to create the Segmented Cooktop we recognized that people are more and more aware of the advantages of induction, gas, and griddle cooking surfaces and would love to be able to combine them without having to choose just one," said Nicola Bertazzoni, vice president of sales and sixth-generation family executive for Bertazzoni, who was present at the show to accept the award.

The Segmented Cooktop is one of the many products included in the Bertazzoni Built-In Line, launched in the Fall of 2011. Also included in the line is a series of wall ovens and ventilation systems that are available in both Professional and Design models.

Caloric Home Appliance Brand To Be Relaunched

Caloric Home Appliance Brand To Be Relaunched

Caloric Appliances have been off the market since the 1990's, however they are making a comeback in late 2012.
I know many people who own Caloric Appliances and swear by them and do not want to get rid of them so fast. Check out the article below to read all the details on the come back.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Caloric brand name will be reintroduced on kitchen appliances in late 2012 after being off the market since the 1990s.

JMM Lee Properties, LLC is the owner and licensor of the Caloric brand as part of a diverse portfolio of consumer trademarks. IMM noted that the Caloric appliance brand was known as one of the first brands to offer a complete line of matching appliances for upscale kitchens.

"Consumers remember Caloric for quality gas ranges and complete kitchen appliance sets," said Michael Lee, a managing partner at JMM Lee Properties. "They were one of the first to offer a matching bundle of custom color kitchen appliances and decor."

The new Caloric brand will offer built-in appliances, beginning with a line of stainless steel ovens and ranges, in the fall of 2012. The company plans to roll out an entire line of built-in and counter top appliances in phases over the next year.

"Before Caloric, consumers would pick and choose appliances from a variety of manufactures," said Lee. "In the 1950s and 1960s Caloric created the complete kitchen package by offering built-in ovens, dishwashers, refrigerators, vent hoods; literally everything including a matching kitchen sink."

Caloric was also one of the first companies to focus on built-in kitchen appliances, including the company's iconic gas wall ovens.

Caloric Corporation started as a stove maker in the 1940s and was acquired by Raytheon Company - owner of kitchen appliance OEM Amana and laundry appliance brand Speed Queen - in 1967. Caloric and Speed Queen operations were eventually absorbed into Amana operations in the early 1990s.

The 1990s eventually saw the phase-out of the Caloric brand name and it remained a dormant property of Amana. Amana was acquired by Goodman in 1997, then by Maytag in 2002. Maytag, along with Amana and its ownership of the Caloric brand name, were acquired by Whirlpool Corporation in 2006. Whirlpool retained ownership of the unused Caloric brand until last year.

New brand owner JMM Lee Properties also owns and licenses two other legacy appliance trademarks once owned by Amana: Modern Maid and Litton. Other trademarks owned and licensed by the company include Bendix, AirTouch, Frogskins, and Slates.

Dishwasher Rinse Aids

Dishwasher Rinse Aids

We hear a lot of people complaining that they have to hand wash their dishes when they come out of the dryer and the answer is simple....use a dishwasher rinse aid such as Jet-Dry. Jet-Dry or any other dishwasher rinse aid is made to work WITH you dishwashers and not against them. They are made to help "sheet off" the water on your dishes to help in the drying cycle and to make sure you are not hand washing after each load.  So pick up a bottle at your local food store or convenience store and fill the reservoir with your rinse aid. It will definitely help dry your dishes!

Your Oven and Aluminum Foil

Your Oven and Aluminum Foil

Many many years ago, tin foil was actually made from tin which made it a perfect liner for the inside of your oven to help keep it clean.  I don't know about you, but I was told that putting a sheet of tin foil on the bottom of the inside of my oven would make for easy clean up in case anything spilled.  Now, tin foil is aluminum foil and therefore NOT a good product for lining the bottom of your oven with.  Aluminum foil will actually melt right to the bottom of your oven due to the heat, where tin foil never melted.  So, instead of lining the bottom of your oven, you can line the cooking rack you are using instead.

Samsung Introduces Oven With WiFi & Android Baked In

Samsung Introduces Oven With WiFi & Android Baked In

You read it right, Samsung has created a ceramic oven with Wifi and it's own android app that has over 160 different presets for various meals. You can also control the temperature, see when your preheating is up and more from your Android phone or tablet when connected to the oven.

A ceramic oven with heat up quickly and according to the Korean Samsung website the oven is mindful of your health. You can even view on the oven itself or the Android app how many calories are in your food.

Not only are the electronics in the oven made by Samsung but the oven itself is more energy efficient because it uses Samsung’s patented ceramic enamel cavity which has been fired at temperatures higher than 1472 degrees. It also has an oven cleaning mode you can access directly from your Android phone.

As much as I think this is the wave of the future and a wonderful idea, my main concern is people leaving uncooked food in here all day and then turning it on an hour before they come home from work so it is all ready when they get back.  Although a great concept and a wonderful time saver, leaving uncooked food out for this long can cause it to go back and then people would be eating rotten food.

Right now the oven is only available in Korea, along with several other Android powered appliances but hopefully we’ll see some of this great technology in the US before too long.
